To empower adults to take control of their health to prevent and reverse life-threatening weight-related illnesses.

Obesity is a major public health problem in Broward and throughout the country. According to the 2015 Broward County Health Needs Assessment, 66% of adults are overweight and 1 in every 7 kids is obese or overweight. The prevalence of chronic diseases linked to the obesity epidemic, like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and cancer, has increased sharply and are the highest among Broward women, as well as our low-income and minority residents.

Children born after 2010 will be the first generation in our nation's history to die younger than their parents due to this epidemic. More than $190 billion is now spent nationally every year on weight-related healthcare expenses with chronic obesity related diseases being the second leading cause of death behind smoking cigarettes.

Over the past three years, the Foundation has learned that the health of our adult resident’s is profoundly shaped by economic factors coupled with medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer.  In particular, neighborhoods in Broward marked by poverty are cut off from opportunities and resources that promote wellness.
Through 10 unique projects, the Foundation has removed barriers and helped more than 1,700 adults make healthy choices and increased their activity level.  This has helped to prevent and reverse life-threatening and weight-related illnesses and conditions.
